Overview

Under the direction of the Director of Facilities with onsite supervision by the Facility Manager, the Maintenance Custodian gets assigned to complete building maintenance projects at all family shelters.  The Maintenance Custodian must have demonstrated technical ability in painting, carpentry electrical and plumbing with some knowledge of the mechanical systems operating within the facility.  The Maintenance Custodian moves through each family shelter ensuring all special project needs are completed.  The Maintenance Custodian helps to complete work orders and may at times be called upon to assist in the cleaning of all vacant units so as to ensure we maintain the regulatory vacant room preparedness time frame of four hours.

Responsibilities

  • The Maintenance Custodian reports directly to the Facility Manager regarding building maintenance, rep [air and special project needs.; immediately reports any major building repairs, hazards, defects and/or supply needs to the Superintendent.
  • The Maintenance Custodian is assigned and will rotate amongst all shelters as is needed and scheduled to complete any and all building repairs and needs (i.e. painting, electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, landscaping).
  • The Maintenance Custodian promptly completes all work orders as assigned.
  • The Maintenance Custodian takes responsibility for proper care and maintenance of tools, supplies, and equipment being used in the performance of duties.
  • The Maintenance Custodian assists with ground clean up and snow removal as assigned.
  • The Maintenance Custodian maintains a safe and sanitary workspace and follows all OSHA regulations.
  • As Needed, the Maintenance Custodian drives the agency vehicle as needed.  Accurately tracks all mileage within van logbook.
  • As Needed, the Maintenance Custodian will clean and sanitize any assigned vacant units within the DHS regulatory timeline of 4 hours post discharge.
  • As Needed, the Maintenance Custodian promptly cleans all public areas and workspaces as assigned.
  • As Needed, the Maintenance Custodian empties all trash from the compactor as assigned.
  • As Needed, the Maintenance Custodian properly cleans and maintains floors (strip, wax, buff, mop and/or vacuum) as assigned
  • As needed, the Maintenance Custodian assists in moving furniture and belongings of clients into and out of units as assigned.
  • The Maintenance Custodian’s schedule may include working on weekends
  • To continue to run each of our shelters with excellence and to meet the needs of the program, employees may be asked to assume their same position at one of our other shelters operated by the Salvation Army at the discretion of the Director of Shelters or Salvation Army Department Heads.
  • Other assignments and tasks may be added, at the discretion of the Director of Shelters or Salvation Army Department Heads.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Experience working with a disadvantaged population is a plus.
  • Must have the ability to lift at least fifty pounds and be able to work at least an eight hour shift primarily standing and moving.
  • Must have the ability to take and follow instructions and follow through with assigned tasks, familiarity with basic cleaning equipment.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge in the areas of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting and have a technical knowledge of mechanical systems operated within the physical plant.  
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License is required.
  • Willing to become certified as a Fire Safety Coordinator is strongly desired.
