Overview

Location: Marshall House Shelter (Hartford, CT)

Status: Exempt, Full-Time 

Hours Per Week: 40 minimally (including on-call responsibility of two weeks every four weeks, weekend hours as needed)

Schedule: Mon-Fri; 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, may vary depending on need

 

Scope & Purpose of Position: Provide case management and respond immediately to help the client overcome barriers to accessing services. Advocate and connect them to crucial resources to help them resolve their immediate crisis, with the goal of helping them access housing to end their homelessness. Support families and individuals experiencing homelessness and supervise Housing Support Workers. Use a housing-first approach and trauma-informed practices to build trust-based and collaborative relationships. Coordinate with the Greater Hartford Coordinated Access Network (GH-CAN) and attend community meetings and case conferencing.

Responsibilities

  • Assist households in self-resolving their housing crisis.
  • Assist sheltered youth, ages 18 to 24, with crisis intervention, problem-solving, action planning, and skill building to address immediate life and safety issues.
  • Assist with grant applications and reports as required by The Salvation Army.
  • Attend CAN meetings to advocate for guests and ensure coordination.
  • Collaborate with CAN housing providers to expedite moves to permanent housing
  • Collaborate with McKinney Vento Liaison to ensure children are enrolled in and attending school.
  • Complete 90-day and annual evaluations for each employee.
  • In collaboration with the supervisor, interview, hire, and train Housing Support Workers for the 27-bed shelter.
  • Create and maintain a monthly staffing schedule to ensure adequate shelter coverage 24/7.
  • Deliver services with safety, respect, and effectiveness.
  • Maintain a caseload of sheltered families, individual women, and individual youth (ages 18 to 24).
  • Maintain and submit monthly statistics.
  • Provide case management to households.
  • Prepare and complete intake packages for guests.
  • Serve as an on-call supervisor for the shelter two weeks every four weeks; advise staff on incidents and concerns; exercise appropriate judgment; complete any paperwork necessary.
  • Utilize a strength-based approach when working with clients, employees, the agency, and the community. Work to reduce households’ average length of stay in the emergency shelter by increasing the number of households who exit to permanent housing.
  • Utilize the Harm Reduction model and trauma-informed approach during the delivery of services.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or a minimum of a two-year degree in human-related services and two years of related experience required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional boundaries and the ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the work environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and must work well under pressure.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community resources, social service agencies, and landlords.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required. Spanish speaking preferred.
  • Experience working with at-risk populations and persons experiencing homelessness; knowledge and belief in the “Housing First” philosophy and strategies preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of case management experience is required, and supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Must complete KeepSAfe and other training requirements upon hire.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite programs required.
  • Valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle or access to transportation required.
