Overview

Location: Divisional Headquarters (Hartford & Ashford, CT)

Hours Per Week: 40 minimally

Schedule: Mon-Fri; 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, may vary depending on need

Weekends included for special events and summer hours will vary as the camp schedule requires this position to live at camp in Ashford, CT and participate in the regular camp schedule (June-August)

 

Purpose of Position: Assist supervisor(s) in organizing and implementing the Camp CONNRI summer camp program and other Youth Department programming around the Division throughout the year.  Work with supervisor(s) to provide leadership in implementing a Christian Education program to provide a more substantial evangelistic presence for young people and adults in the Southern New England Division.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a positive and professional representative of The Salvation Army.
  • Actively recruit summer camp staff.
  • Keep current with CT State Licensing regulations and American Camping Association (ACA) standards, preparing all materials for inspections.
  • Assist DYS with all State, ACA, and camp staff paperwork and documents.
  • Organize and record weekly USDA paperwork for each camp session.
  • Process summer employment packets in coordination with the Human Resources Department.
  • Maintain appropriate time and attendance and other employment records in accordance with the HR and Payroll Department policies.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of staff orientation and training.
  • Process all camper applications, working with the Corps/Service Unit liaisons to ensure that all paperwork is completed correctly, filed, accessible, and prepared for the check-in procedure.
  • Plan for and provide Christian Spiritual Formation resources and meetings for the summer camp staff in conjunction with the DYS.
  • Support camp staff supervisors with the daily camp program and staff supervision.
  • Participate in planning and strategy meetings for the Youth Department, taking minutes and providing insight and feedback regarding divisional ministry opportunities.
  • Assist in Youth Commission meetings as directed by the DYS.
  • Promote and prepare any administrative needs for youth-related programs and be present to assist at these programs as needed during the off-camp season. This includes but is not limited to divisional music and art classes, corps cadet encampment, youth councils, young adult retreats, and family camp weekends.
  • Participate in youth-related divisional and territorial seminars and conferences as directed by the supervisor.
  • Assist in clerical duties of the Youth Department, including birthday cards for youth, camp assessments, events, program registrations, etc.
  • Order supplies from THQ and other venues as needed.
  • Serve as a resource for corps regarding Salvation Army Sunday School programs and Salvation Army troops and discipleship programs.
  • Serve as a resource and maintain communication with all corps officers to provide support and encourage youth program growth.
  • Respond to questions, emails, phone calls, and mail correspondence in a timely manner.

Qualifications

  • Must embrace, support, and reflect well on The Salvation Army’s mission and values.
  • Must have a strong relationship with Jesus Christ with the ability and passion to share the gospel message.
  • Previous administrative and youth program experience required.
  • Previous supervisory experience required.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required. Must obtain and maintain driving privileges per TSA insurance standards.
  • Familiarity with Connecticut State Licensing regulations and the American Camping Association standards is preferred.
  • A committed Salvationist familiar with traditional Salvation Army youth programming such as sunbeams, girl guards, boys adventure corps, corps cadets, and junior soldiers is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel, is preferred.
  • A positive “can do” attitude with a “sleeves rolled up” leadership approach.
  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Highly organized with the ability to handle multiple projects.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Must complete KeepSAfe and other training requirements upon hire.
  • Willing to accept and adhere to The Salvation Army’s ministry focus and ecclesiastical position.
