Overview

Location: Norwalk Corps (Norwalk, CT)                                                                                                                      

Status:  Non-Exempt, Temporary (November – December)

Hours Per Week: Up to 40 

Schedule: TBD - may have to work evenings, weekends, and holidays

 

Scope & Purpose of Position: Will support all holiday programs (Angel Tree, Holiday Store, Adopt-a-Family, Kettle Campaign, etc.) of The Salvation Army’s Willimantic Corps. Will pick up, load, deliver, and unload donated items and assist with driving employees to bell-ringing locations. Will recruit, train, coordinate, and monitor the work of employee and volunteer bell ringers.  Will assist with various office duties.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with coordinating all fundraising activities for the Annual Kettle Campaign.
  • Complete an inventory and prepare kettle equipment.
  • Maintain an appropriate filing system for all Kettle Campaign information.
  • Contact local store managers to secure approval for a kettle stand.
  • Assist with recruiting individual and group bell ringer volunteers and oversee their activities.
  • Interview, recruit, screen, and select bell-ringing staff, ensuring all sites are covered effectively.
  • Provide direct training and supervision to all bell ringers and drivers and monitor bell ringers by making unannounced visits to kettle sites.
  • Assist with scheduling the work hours and locations for bell ringers to maximize net income and coordinate transportation and drivers as required.
  • Respond to all emergency absences and scheduling breakdowns by scheduling another employee or volunteer and informing the supervisor if an employee or volunteer is unable to fill a shift.
  • Ensure daily secure delivery and pick-up of kettles to and from the sites.
  • Assist the count team with counting kettle money and preparing deposits.
  • Prepare and maintain up-to-date records and databases for daily kettle income information.
  • Process and submit weekly payroll reports for seasonal employees and hours reports for volunteers.
  • Check the payroll register against the timesheets every week.
  • Prepare reports regarding the status of the Kettle Campaign.
  • Retrieve all equipment/supplies from various kettle locations post-campaign and prepare an inventory.
  • Prepare plaques and certificates of recognition for employees and volunteers.
  • Promote the Kettle Campaign using radio, newspaper, television, social media, and other outlets.
  • Keep dialog with local churches, schools, service clubs, community leaders, etc., to discuss the current needs of The Salvation Army.
  • Plan, coordinate, and prepare special events as requested.
  • Assist with basic office duties such as answering phones, taking messages, email correspondence, filing, etc.
  • Help schedule and coordinate pick-up routes and deliveries of Angel Tree and Adopt-a-Family donations.
  • Track the collection of holiday items and keep items separate and organized from other donations.
  • Drive a 15-17’ truck or passenger van to various locations to collect food, clothing, toys, etc., and load and unload items.
  • Keep the interior of vehicles clean of debris and clutter.
  • Practice safe driving habits and follow all state and national safety regulations and standards.
  • Track fuel levels and mileage logs for all van usage.
  • Communicate all barriers and issues to the direct supervisor.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, be willing to drive a 12-passenger van, pass The Salvation Army’s online driver safety course, and be able to drive safely in inclement weather, such as light snow.
  • Must read, write, and communicate well in English. Being bilingual in English and Spanish is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work with limited supervision, and meet deadlines.
  • Possess the ability to maintain volunteer and financial databases and prepare accurate and complete records and reports.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced work environment while demonstrating a positive and professional attitude.
  • Experience with general office equipment and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge and experience with volunteer recruitment methods and practices preferred.
  • Must be reliable and punctual and can work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Strong customer service, organization, and time management skills are required.
