Overview

 Location: Marshall House Overflow Shelter (Harford, CT)

Status: Non-exempt, Temporary (November 2024 thru March 2025)

Hours Per Week: TBD

Scope & Purpose of Position: Provide daily supervision, monitoring, reporting, and technical support services to clients accessing no-freeze programs; maintain appropriate records in addition to ongoing written and verbal communication with the supervisor regarding daily client activities; and facilitate an emotional and physical environment conducive to enhancing positive client morale and stabilization.

Responsibilities

  • Complete intakes on households unable to be diverted/triaged to other shelters, including, but not limited to, reviewing rules and obtaining signatures, filling out intake packets, including the release of information, and familiarizing clients with resources offered, including the on-site Case Manager.
  • Provide a supportive, encouraging environment and one-on-one support to residents.
  • Screen prospective residents for possible admission following Greater Hartford CAN cold weather protocol.
  • Authorize and complete requests for hotel stays per Marshall House and Greater Harford CAN cold weather protocol.
  • Contact area shelters to transfer clients from the No Freeze Program to a more stable shelter placement.
  • Document all referrals refused by the clients and complete regular, ongoing entries in the logbook.
  • Provide coverage for the facility by monitoring the doors and answering the phone, including, but not limited to, reviewing all client and guest photo identification upon entry into the building at all times, controlling the flow of traffic into and out of the building by ensuring all clients and visitors sign in and out in the logbook.
  • Conduct security checks in and around the premises to ensure everyone’s safety. Log all security and fire checks hourly to maintain order.
  • Keep staff area stocked with copies of all appropriate forms.
  • Report to all scheduled shifts on time and ready to perform duties. Plan for coverage if unable to report to work and follow the supervisor's call-out procedures.
  • Ensure there is always a 1:25 ratio for staff to adult residents. Staff must stay on duty until coverage arrives. During shift changes, brief staff on client issues or concerns.
  • Perform all required shift tasks before the completion of each shift.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintenance of the facility. Collect dirty linens in designated areas to be laundered and assist with laundry when needed.
  • Assist in preparing meals/food for shelter guests. Properly dispose of leftover meals at the end of each shift.
  • Assist with routine personal hygiene as needed (i.e., provide toiletries and instruct in their proper use).
  • Store, provide, and make available resident’s medication when necessary.
  • Complete the discharge procedure each day, including but not limited to collecting & washing linens, making a discharge entry in the logbook, obtaining a forwarding address, and completing the Exiting Procedure and Exit Form to receive the guest’s destination.
  • Alert supervisor immediately of any concerns regarding parent/child interactions.
  • Complete incident reports, as needed, and provide copies to the Program Coordinator, Case Manager, and Incident Book.
  • In a medical emergency or if an accident occurs on the property, call 911, arrange for medical attention, and thoroughly document the occurrence with an incident report.
  • Provide crisis intervention and the necessary support and resources to residents when situations arise (i.e., police, Mobil Crisis, drug treatment programs, medical, etc.).
  • Maintain donations as instructed, store and distribute supplies to clients as needed, and obtain signatures for all donated items.
  • Attend and participate in all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to establish and set appropriate limits with persons served to help them gain skills and confidence.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the work environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other personnel, service providers, and professionals.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and work well under pressure.
  • Basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Capacity to maintain a role to empower clients and to intervene appropriately to meet service goals.
  • Commitment to empowering others to solve their problems.
  • Committed to working with the homeless population.
  • Conviction about the capacity of people to grow and change.
  • Experience working with at-risk populations or persons experiencing homelessness preferred.
  • Fluency in the English language is required. Spanish speaking ability preferred.
  • Must be empathetic and caring.
  • Must have a minimum availability of three shifts weekly.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of the population served.
  • Willing to work weekends, evenings (including overnights), and holidays is required.
  • Must complete KeepSAfe Core training and Mandated Reporter within 30 days of being hired and KeepSAfe refresher training annually, if applicable. Must also complete the Sexual Harassment Prevention training within six months of being hired, if appropriate.
