Overview

Position: Shelter Director

Department: Hospitality House

Availability of Position: Immediate

Schedule: Monday through Friday 9AM to 5PM

Supervises: Monitors, Caseworkers, Maintenance staff, Cook, Office Manager, Kitchen Staff.

Reporting Relationship: Corps Officer

Salary and Grade:$60,000 per year; Grade 13, Exempt

Position Overview:

The Shelter Director provides leadership to all staff members and volunteers, and stablish shift schedules so that all minimum staffing requirements are met twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. This includes among other things, the scheduling of regular staff meetings, and the moderation of these meetings.

Responsibilities

Description of Position:  

  • Identify and implement training needs of staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure safety of all shelter residents at all times, safeguard all property and equipment associated with the operation of Hospitality House.
  • Ensure all records (case management, financial, policies and procedures, etc.) are properly kept, and that confidentiality of same is not compromised.
  • Complete and submit statistical requirements in a timely manner.
  • Serve as an official representative of The Salvation Army, as assigned, to local inter-agencies and housing authorities and government bodies. Develop and maintain collaborative efforts with same.
  • In coordination with Corps Officers, assist Advisory Board, shelter committee and internal management in achieving financial sustainability through the preparation of funding proposals, reports and the participation of fundraising activities.
  • Work with Corps Officers to determine hiring and termination of staff.
  • Determine eligibility of persons or families into emergency shelter or supportive housing program.
  • Have an understanding and enforce Hospitality House’s rules and regulations as well as the employee code of ethics and supervisor handbook.
  • In the supervision of caseworkers, the Shelter Director must:
    • Make sure caseworkers are carrying out their duties by completing intakes and service plans in a professional and timely matter. That such intakes and case notes are entered into the computer on a timely manner.
    • That caseworkers meet with residents on a weekly basis or more as needed. Written progress reports are necessary if face to face meetings are not feasible.
    • That they provide referrals as needed. To advocate and assist residents onsite and offsite.
    • Maintain a consistent census within Hospitality House programs and that they expedite internal transfers and referrals (i.e., from emergency to supportive housing).
    • Discuss rule infractions personally with residents on as-needed basis.
    • That case workers maintain regular contact with each resident’s external case managers (Social Services, housing, etc.).

Qualifications

Requirements:    

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; 3-5 years of related experience.
  • Basic Computer Skills, Microsoft Office—Word, Power Point; Excel; Outlook
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have good time management skills.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
  • Be able to work independently, work well in groups and be able to demonstrate good judgement and leadership skills.
  • Valid PA Driver’s License.
  • Child Protection Clearances PA Act 153 requires that all prospective employees complete the following clearance and background checks prior to employment: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record/Fingerprint Check. Meets the Child Protection Clearances required by PA Act 153 along with renewals every five years.
