Overview

Location: New London Corps (New London, CT)

Status: Part-time

Hours Per Week: 25

Schedule: Mon-Fri; 1:30 pm – 6:30 pm

 

Purpose of Position:  Serve as a positive Christian role model in the lives of children.  Create and maintain a safe physical and emotional environment, directly supervise children during program hours, and assist with planning and implementing program areas.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with creating and implementing programs to enhance a healthy, spiritual, physical, and emotional development for youth members.
  • Attend and chaperone Corps, Divisional, and Territorial retreats and events as needed.
  • Complete accident or incident reports when appropriate according to procedures.
  • Complete any required or mandated trainings and/or professional development.
  • Complete daily reports on department activities and attendance.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with young adults/teens at local colleges and high schools, where permitted.
  • Develop and maintain practical approaches to building solid Christian living among the children, teens, and younger adults.
  • Engage and inform parents regarding community resources, opportunities, and expectations of youth members.
  • Help with summer Vacation Bible School outreach.
  • Implement and actively supervise programs, services, and activities for youth
  • Promote a physically and emotionally safe environment for youth.
  • Provide guidance and positive role modeling to The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club youth members.
  • Provide homework/power-hour support.
  • Stimulate youth members’ interest and positive participation in activities.
  • Work with employees and officers on special events and programs in other areas of the Corps as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent with relevant youth work or volunteer experience.
  • Experience in working at The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club is a plus.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.
  • Computer skills particularly with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Publisher, and Excel.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and be flexible.
  • Must be energetic, organized, dependable, and compassionate.
  • Must have a genuine interest and ability to relate with youth and earn their respect.
  • Must have a realistic understanding of community life and the forces that influence youth.
  • Must have good communication and interpersonal skills and is understandable and relevant to young people.
  • Must have maturity, self-control, sound judgment, leadership, sense of humor, and patience.
  • Must role model academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy life skills.
  • Must share a vision for The Salvation Army's philosophy for youth ministry.
  • Self-motivated and strong communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license which is free of restriction by both the granting state and Chesterfield Insurance.
  • Will respect and promote the interest of The Salvation Army. The individual is not required to embrace the tenets of faith, but he/she is required to promote and respect the mission of The Salvation Army.
