Overview

Location:Greater Hartford Area Services & Hartford Citadel (Hartford, CT)

Status: Exempt, Full-time

Hours Per Week: 40 minimally

Schedule:Tues & Thurs, 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm; Wed & Fri & Sun, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm  (Must be able to work one Saturday per month. Occasional weekends, evenings, and holidays as required for performance duties or as requested to support the ongoing operations of the Greater Hartford Music School and Worship.)

Scope & Purpose of Position: Responsible for the development and implementation of the afterschool music programs, focusing on brass, vocal, piano, dance, drama, and general music instruction. Will plan, organize, recruit, and direct the Congregational Life Choir and Corps’ Brass Band. Provide piano accompaniment for Sunday Worship services, music groups, and special events at the Hartford Citadel Corps. Provide pastoral care for youth participants.  This position must be filled by an active Salvationist Soldier.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a positive and professional representative of The Salvation Army.
  • Supervise performing arts programming, instructors, and volunteers.
  • Develop and implement an afterschool music program focusing on brass, vocal, piano, creative arts, and general music instruction.
  • Interact with parents and students, encouraging involvement in the Congregational Life Ministry.
  • Recruit and supervise qualified volunteers to assist with teaching classes.
  • Provide music, creative arts leadership, and program development that aligns with the vision of The Salvation Army’s Eastern Territory.
  • Assist with recruiting campers for Camp CONNRI’s music and art sessions.
  • Assist in maintaining performing arts instruments, files, and equipment inventory.
  • Plan, organize, and direct the Congregational Life Music programs to develop local leadership for these programs.
  • Plan, organize, and direct the Congregational Life Choir for inspiring quality musical presentations, including weekly rehearsals and public performances.
  • Recruit, train, and prepare soloists.
  • Present music selections during Sunday Worship Service and special events, as appropriate.
  • Provide piano accompaniment for Sunday Worship services, music groups, and special events.
  • Provide an assessment document that tracks the progress of each student (Methods books).
  • Maintain daily stats and attendance records.
  • Provide transportation of music participants as needed.
  • Assist with writing grant proposals to obtain funding for performing arts programs.
  • Serve as an intentional liaison between all departments (the Corps in Hartford, Marshall House Family Shelter, and The Right Place School Readiness Child and Family Center) related to performing arts.
  • Support music and arts initiatives in the Division throughout the year.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned, to ensure the success of Greater Hartford Area Services and the Hartford Citadel Corps.
  • Adhere to guidelines for staff responsibilities as found in The Salvation Army’s Employee Manuals.

Qualifications

  • Must be an active uniform-wearing Salvationist musician and willing to soldier at the Hartford Citadel Corps who has strong personal Christian values and high moral character.
  • Must embrace, support, and reflect well on The Salvation Army’s mission and values.
  • Must communicate a clear expression of Christian faith and willingness to incorporate faith values into work responsibilities daily.
  • Bachelor’s degree in music/music education or a related field is preferred.
  • Three to five years of experience in a classroom setting, including conducting an orchestra and directing choirs, brass/marching bands, and performing arts (theatre, drama, dance, etc.).
  • Must be able to teach all levels and ages of music and be comfortable with group and individual instruction.
  • Keyboard experience preferred.
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate clearly in English.
  • Must possess the ability to work and relate well with staff, volunteers, program participants, and parents/guardians.
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Sterling interpersonal skills, applies tact and diplomacy, friendly, and works well with all ages.
  • Humble spirit and able to work well as a part of a team.
  • Must be flexible and possess a strong work ethic.
  • A positive, contagious “can-do” attitude.
  • Valid driver’s license required. Must obtain and maintain driving privileges per The Salvation Army insurance company and have the ability to drive a 12-passenger van.
  • Must be able to function effectively and independently, with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate discretion, integrity, and confidentiality in dealing with all matters.
  • Must maintain a professional appearance.
  • Must complete the KeepSAfe training and other required trainings upon hire.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Strong time-management skills with the ability to organize.
