Overview

Position: Learning Zone Tutor                                                                                                 

Location: Philadelphia Citadel Corps   

Availability of Position: Immediate

Schedule: Part-time Plus 20-29 hours weekly; Monday to Friday 1:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Reporting Relationship: Corps Officers

Salary Grade: $17.00/ hr; 74

Position Overview:           

The Salvation Army Learning Zone Tutor (LZT) serves neighborhood children as a homework helper, Reading and Math tutor, and group leader within The Salvation Army's Learning Zone program.

Responsibilities

Description of Position:

  • Assist students with homework, as well as develop excellent study habits.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans for students.
  • Provide academic tutoring to assigned students, either in a group and/or individually aimed at developing student mastery, using Math and English curriculums such as Achieve Now, Do the Math, After the Bell and Math decoding curriculums.
  • Administer pre/post, and on-going assessment tools concerning sight words, multiplication tables, and the associated curriculum.
  • Maintain and update daily and weekly student records with required data on academic progress, attendance, and behavior.
  • Assist vendors in implementing enrichment and recreational programming.
  • Meet with teachers, parents, and staff to develop specific achievement goals and prepare progress reports for parents.
  • Serve as a positive role model.
  • In the event of an incident, prepare an incident report in a timely fashion.
  • Walk to Franklin Elementary School to pick up children for the program.
  • Attend trainings, as instructed.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Requirements:                       

  • Minimum requirement of high school diploma with 2 to 3 years of tutoring/teaching experience; Bachelor's degree or Bachelor's degree in progress preferred.
  • Experience working in neighborhoods and with community members.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, strong organizational, and classroom management skills.
  • Possess the ability to relate to students, parents, and teachers from varying education, cultural, and social backgrounds.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Maintain a standard of excellent and possess the ability to work well under supervision.
  • Must foster a spirit of compassion and commitment to the children that participate in the Site program.
  • As a Mandated Reporter, must provide proof of having completed training on recognizing and reporting child abuse meeting the training standards of PA Act 153 of 2014 within 30 days of employment with recurrent training required every five years thereafter.
  • Meets the Child Protection Clearances required by PA Act 153 to include PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record Check.
  • Must possess an appreciation for and understanding of the mission of The Salvation Army.
