Overview

Cook reports to the Soup Kitchen Supervisor or the Business Manager in the Supervisor’s absence. The Cook is responsible for daily preparation of food, cleaning and maintenance of the Kitchen department. The Cook must perform the tasks in a manner in keeping with the respect and consideration for the needs of the clients and in compliance with the Department of Health requirements.

The essential functions of the job include but are not limited to the duties listed on the job description.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up station according to center guideline; prepares all food items as directed and in a sanitary manner.
  • Follows recipes, portion controls and preparations specifications as set by the menu; clean and maintains Kitchen in practicing good safety, sanitation, organizational skills.
  • Prepares and serves food for daily community feeding program and After School Program and keeps a daily count for statistical purposes.
  • Provide weekly, an inventory of food and paper good items in walk in, pantry and third floor storage.
  • Responsible for the cleaning, sanitation, and organization of kitchen, walk-in coolers, freezers, and all storage areas.
  • Responsible for cleaning and sanitizing dish towels, napkins, and table clothes, when needed.
  • Weekly, order and prepare food items for both weekday and weekend feedings.
  •  Order food and equipment for the Corps and Gains Program
  • Attend training classes on training procedures, including food handling and other classes scheduled by the management as requested. 
  • Supervise all volunteers, assistant, and interns.

  • Consistently reports to work on time and is ready to begin work at the start of the shift and does not abuse sick time or personal days
  • Always provides proper notification when late absent.
  • Demonstrates reliability when on-call.  Available to work overtime when necessary (Only Non-Exempt employees).
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of workflow.  Able to perform duties independently, with minimal need of direct supervision.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of clients, program, and The Salvation Army
  • Reports to work well groomed and in compliance with dress code. 
  • Demonstrates the ability to interact in a positive and helpful manner with clients, visitors, contract staff, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Reflects commitment to building a supportive work environment and maintains a positive attitude at the workplace and towards job.
  • Projects a good image in dealing with the public and clients.  Is willing to make an extra effort to help build a quality program.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Two or more years of experience in food services environment.
  • Must have ServSafe Food Handlers Certification, or the ability to complete the 15 hours ServSafe Food Handlers Certification.
  • Respect and Consideration for the needs of homeless adults.
