Overview

Location: Divisional Headquarters, Advancement Department, Gift Planning Office (Hartford, CT)

Status: Non-exempt, Full-time

Hours Per Week: 35

Schedule: Mon-Fri; 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Scope & Purpose of Position: Assist with securing funding through bequests, gift annuities, charitable trusts, and other planned giving vehicles. Serve as a critical member of the gift planning team and be responsible for coordinating all gift planning administrative duties.  Often serves as a liaison between Gift Planning Director and donors.Prepare detailed and complex donor proposals, including recommending specific strategy to the Gift Planning Director.  Maintain strict confidentiality regarding sensitive personal and financial information.  Provide a thorough understanding of, and appreciation for, the critical importance of philanthropic intent to the organization.  At all times demonstrate the highest ethical and professional standards and personify, through daily professional performance, the mission of The Salvation Army. 

Responsibilities

  • Create a variety of interpersonal communication between donors and department, including setting up meetings, sending personal/celebratory messages, and relationship building.
  • Schedule donor, prospect and professional advisor appointments and meetings.
  • Assist and provide donors, prospects, lawyers, financial planners, and other professional advisors with gift planning and other specific financial information.
  • Implement donor and prospect outreach.
  • Perform background research on donors and prospects.
  • Organize distribution of all gift planning materials.
  • Coordinate mass solicitation mailings.
  • Manage the content, design, and production of collateral materials, web presence, email communications, social media, and other local marketing efforts.
  • Regularly update the “Legacy Society” donor recognition website.
  • Develop, produce, and analyze reports that will enable Gift Planning to refine ongoing marketing practices and improve return on investment.
  • Process life-income gifts in approved manner.
  • Manage and update all confidential donor and professional advisor files.
  • Apply a technical and practical knowledge of specific software and database management to enhance the measured results of the department.
  • Maintain donor database.
  • Maintain a current and accurate list of donors and prospects for all areas of gift planning, i.e. bequests, annuities and trusts.
  • Prepare detailed analysis and gift proposals that are specific to individual donors and prospects.
  • Facilitate and manage multiple projects and speak for the organization as requested.
  • Participate and interact in the implementation of special activities and events as requested.
  • Perform administrative functions.
  • Maintain a current, thorough working knowledge of both federal and state tax law as it relates to both current and estate giving.
  • Liquidate stock as needed.
  • Maintain all stock donation records. 
  • Opportunity to manage a small portfolio of Gift Planning donors.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 2-5 years of relevant work experience working in gift planning or non-profit fundraising setting.  Other relevant experience may be considered.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, experience with database system(s), in particular Salesforce and Crescendo strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and personal phone manner.
  • Professional demeanor and confidentiality as a standard.
  • Demonstrated experience in following through on assigned tasks including taking initiative.
  • Possess a current, thorough working knowledge of both federal and state tax law as it relates to both current and estate giving.
  • Ability to learn and understand various gift plans including life-income, trust, and deferred giving vehicles.
  • Strong project-management and organization skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Creative thinking, writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally, must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must complete all required trainings upon hire.
